I was thinking more along the lines that he is like a “super host” or “meta host” who has somehow been granted, or acquired guest status and guest privileges. He may, in fact believe he’s a guest.

It’s been ages since i saw the original. The “sub-level” that they went to in order to investigate the unscheduled activity (is that what they called it?) and instead found Hopkins chatting w/that old retired robot? I’m pretty sure that was modeled after the park reception area or some such in the original film.

It seems like a time capsule opened within the lifetime of those involved in its sealing is... I don’t know, kinda... weak?

The show it most resembles (imho) is Channel 4's Utopia. At least insofar as it’s stark and relentless paranoia and its visual aesthetic.

Another example of a debris field is created on the ocean floor when a ship sinks or an aircraft crashes on the surface.

Good choices. I’d add:

Seconds with Rock Hudson! trying not to spoil here

Way to remind me of that moment. That was terrifying to me as a youngster.

The hallway/twins scene in the Shining was much MUCH scarier than the elevator scene.

Oh, and it must say something interesting in a timely fashion.

For a good movie to be truly great, it has to have an impact beyond its audience. IOW, it must change the medium at the very least. The greatest movies change the broader culture as well.

The Thing is on a very short list of great Sci Fi/Horror films that are watchable AT ALL. It also just so happens to be effin’ great!
