Honestly, I have never understood why this scene is at all controversial. I came away with pretty much this exact explanation right away.

My principle concern is that a movie like this takes the risk of redefining the character and changing his perception in the original film.

Honestly, most good WW2 themes can be used.

Three dimensional systems and their 2-D shadows... lots of different higher dimensional configurations can give similar lower dimensional “appearances.”
