They’re not. They already invested massive amounts of money in the i3 platform and chassis tech. All they need to do is slap a tesla copied drive train in and it will be on par with the competition for another half decade. But they don’t.

This is closer than you think. I can already set torque, speed and engine braking on my electric motorcycle with an app. It won’t be long before they add traction control too.  A third party app is already available to monitor the code too.

I think this will be great for Motorsport, look how good formula E is, and that's not even on proper circuits. Low COG and relatively high weight will mean better overtaking. Slipstreaming will be a big factor, so they need to fix qualifying or it will end up like WEC Monza.
