My friend’s father “helped” my friend’s Spanish fiance buy a used Versa Note with the CVT.  $4250 for a car with 125k miles, nice little subcompact hatchback for a gal used to driving that size of car.  They had already bought the car and then mentioned to me what it was, I just told him “I wouldn’t have bought

Yeah if you were to pack for a trip where you had back seat passengers, I think the sedan actually had more practical usable cargo space (ie not packing the hatch to the roof obstructing visibility).

That’s the French in them. I agree, they have more comfort (full sized supportive seats, squishy padded armrest) that you would never expect in a cheap Japanese econobox. The Sentra of those same years (06-2012) was the same way. In many ways a forgettable crapbox sold mostly with a fragile CVT transmission, but I

FWIW 1st gen Fits have issues with springs rusting/breaking as well.  Just a cheap Japanese car thing

A lot of David’s complaints about the car (bad ride, road noise, poor stability) can at least partially be alleviated by upgrading from something better than those Primewell tires that are on it. If its been driving on Michigan roads for most of those 96k miles, there’s a very good chance the struts are pooched (not

I agree.  Given the track record of MANY modern chain driven motors, give me a serviceable belt.

Absolutely brain-dead take

AWD MX5?  Huh?  Did you mean CX5?

The difference between 13mpg of a LC100 and 16-18mpg of an XJ is pretty non-trivial if you use the more logical L/100km metric

Supposedly he’s got some shop he trusts locally, my point is that it’s a simple job that shouldn’t cost much at all at a shop in terms of parts/labor. Hardly something worth giving up a low mileage Honda over.

That’s a whole lot of writing about a complete aspergers rabbit hole

Yup.  Water pump is an absolutely trivial job on these L15 Fits.  As is basically all of the work described.  You’ll have a hard time finding another car with as low of running costs (Honda parts are generally pretty cheap too)

A Fit that’s needed basic maintenance and a bit of wear and tear stuff and at less than 100k miles? Eric needs to stop being a baby. The water pump on those Fit L15s is a trivial bolt on job and the part itself is like $90 from Honda, not like some crazy buried piece with a 12hr book time like an a Ford 3.5L or

With each added pound your inputs mean less and less to the car, it will turn and stop and accelerate slower, your control slips away”

I mean all these 5000lb “sport” crossovers (X5M, AMG GL, Telsa X) that I’d categorize as the favorites of the cocooned-in oblivious set of drivers around here have a crap ton of grip

Of course cars are completely different and lighter is always better.”

Not completely different, no, in that stuff like a nice heavy door with more substantial hinges, a higher quality door pad with thciker/softer materials, heavier more robust seats, thicker carpet with more insulation, etc, etc will indeed feel (and

Cons: It requires a lot of hours to thoroughly clean and protect eight wheels and tires, twice every year. Scrub tires with rubber cleaner front and back. Scrub wheels with an appropriate wheel cleaner and brush. Touch up paint on the black steelies with Rustoleum Gloss Black. Carefully protect the clean alloys with

My Chrysler van does this and of all the nanny-crap they’ve mandated, I can’t believe automatic headlights on when wipers are being used isn’t one of them.  It’s absolutely TRIVIAL to implement on a modern car.

Because so does everyone else.  But certainly the G80 auto-locker has been around for decades on GM trucks/SUVs as an option.

FWIW the Versa was famous for having big car rear seat legroom, somethin like 37 inches in the back.  Having ridden in Versa cabs in Mexico, at 5'11", they are plenty roomy, indeed comparable to a modern midsize car.

For midwestern highway hauls, it was far from my favorite. Catches the wind and the short wheelbase hobbyhorses over expansion joints. Something like a Forte/Elantra was a notable upgrade.  Perfect city roundabout though.
