Regardless of how it started, the refs were wrong for continuing to be aggressive.  They have the right to defend themselves, but they weren’t doing anything to defuse the situation.

Probably would be better if it weren’t played in reverse.

Because it is their job. They are required to check for safety equipment. Same reason the refs at youth soccer games make everyone line up and show their cleats and bang on their shin guards.
