Running out of fuel isn’t a mechanical issue, and is necessary for there to be no fuel in the plane.  If there’s a mechanical issue that causes fuel starvation (float sticks closed, fuel filter blocked, bad fuel pump, etc.) all the fuel in your tank doesn’t suddenly disappear, it’s still in there.

I just don’t see why we would expect autonomobiles to follow the speed limit that was set for humans, especially when we don’t really expect the humans to follow it either.

Theoretically the speed limit is for human drivers. Since computer drivers are supposed to be able to react much quicker, why would them driving slower be safer?

Uber had live humans “at the wheel” too, but google’s already giving rides.  I’m sure google has much more rigorous standards though.

Funnily enough, none of those fires are caused by being gas powered.  Almost all of the new car fires are caused by shorts in various electrical components (visor lights, cruise control, power seats, etc.)
