“They thought I was broken but I was just a super-chill baby!”
“They thought I was broken but I was just a super-chill baby!”
I knew Valencia was going to date that Tammy Lynn Michaels look-alike as soon as she showed up!
“I’ve never cried before, even as a baby! My parents took me to the doctor. They thought I was broken, but I was just a super chill baby!”
I am 52, and have battled being a cutter since about age 10. Around age 30, was “labeled” with Borderline Personality Disorder. Rachel Bloom is bringing me to tears this season, in a good way. THANK YOU for shining a light on this label and all that lies in its web.
I agree that this was a great episode, but one thing bugged me and will probably keep bugging me - Valencia OUT OF NOWHERE having a girlfriend is so, so weird. I’ve always thought she was a poorly written character, but this is just beyond.
I do feel a bit sorry for Vinny/Josh, to have his role so drastically downgraded that he went from second lead (pretty much) to little more than a background player. It gives us an inkling of what Santino/Greg’s fate would have been if he had stayed after they burned through his story arc. The show’s running gag was…
Rebecca admitting all the stuff she was afraid she’d get hung up on was just devastating. Rachel Bloom is so damn good.
FYI, there is explicit version of “This Session Will Be Different” on YouTube. It doesn’t change much, but it does have a great payoff. I love Michael Hyatt’s voice, that silky alto tone
There were callbacks galore. Did you notice R. in the hot tub was wearing her party bus pole dance bathing suit?
I loved Rebecca eventually giving up trying to skirt around the meta commentary on the reprise. And glad to see Maya! I was worried Povitsky might be gone for good. Now we need Karen to come back.
No, his greatest sin is his refusal to actually do the responsible thing time and time again because he wants to be a happy-go-lucky guy and basically refuses to do or think anything unpleasant that would make that harder. It’s not his fault Rebecca focused all her energy on him, but it is his fault that he spent all…
Allison I always look forward to your reviews :) I really liked this episode, especially since you can tell they probably had the Diagnosis set from the start and didn’t just jump into it with a vague idea of how Rebecca’s “craziness” was going to manifest itself.
Hear hear. As much as the AV Club has cut back its TV review content it’s nice that there’s at least one show where it’s the definite place to go for post-air discussion.
I know this show is a wacky musical and all, but one of the things I love most about it is that it portrays mental health issues in such a responsible way. So much thought and care goes into the writing of this show and it’s beautiful.
Another great episode and thank you Allison for your always thoughtful reviews of these episodes. You add a lot to the content for me.
I love that many of the characters in my favourite shows that struggle with mental health and addiction issues are shown getting help and trying to better themselves.
Yeah I loved Valencia in this- from “Bitch don’t get in my way bitch” to the videos to the song. Heather having an axe was also a great moment. “I live in a murder house!”
I’m a psychologist who specializes in treating BPD, and this is one of the best fictional portrayals of the disorder that I’ve ever seen. The language used to describe the diagnosis was even in line with DBT, one of the most effective treatments for the disorder. Really impressed!
So disappointing — I’d held out some hope that they may have gotten some of that old Mindy Project spark back for the finale, but it fell pretty flat for me. And I saw no evidence that Danny had changed.
I truly understand your point, it is disappointing and somewhat scary to see her “fall to darkness”. (I legitimately thought she had murdered Quinn for a few moments.) But I do think this season is way more realistic in terms of Olivia’s behavior than it has been ever before.
