As a former VW owner, agree with you for the most part. Sampled a TDI Golf a couple of years ago, despite the cheat it was quite nice. Not long before that, did ride in a base Jetta... it was crap. My point? take the base trim of just about anything and you are guaranteed to have an uninspiring experience.
