I got nearly a year of entertainment with my kid using this cardboard and mini-games. Very well worth the $80 I paid at launch, these constructions are very complex and take hours to build. That said if you don’t have a kid to make these with it’s bound to be underwhelming.

It actually might have been the amount of moisture on the sponge itself. The very thing that is cleaning the wet sponge is the water trapped inside the fabric. The water is super heated, thus sanitizing it. If there isn’t enough water the sponge will just burn up.
