Dang do those really go 45mph? I’ve been tempted to pick one up to take on camping trips to bop around on.

I would have killed myself if I had a fast car in highschool. We all street raced and drove like dipshits.

Exactly this. Sounds like this guy just made some giant fireworks that probably weren’t all that unstable and honestly probably were not that dangerous unless they were all detonated simultaneously in a sealed metal container (i.e. giant pipe bomb).

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say (legal illegal?), but the “IEDs” they describe just sound like giant fireworks. IED has a literal definition “improvised explosive device” which carries the emotional connotation that it’s meant to be a weapon and that acronym’s use is intended to lessen the LAPD’s culpability in

At a minimum, it would have directed the blast upward instead of away.

Never posted this much on one story, also wanted to add that I bet they will charge the fireworks guy with the 17 injuries, lol.

Sounds like someone just had really large illegal fireworks. At some point there’s not much difference between a ton of m80s stuck together vs. a stick of dynamite.

If you classify fireworks as IEDs you can then classify the owner as a terrorist which means no amount of collateral damage is too much. We’re fighting for freedom!

It seems like it would save taxpayers some money to bring in a back hoe, dig a hole in this guys front yard 10 feet deep, bury the explosives, park the back hoe on the hole, and then detonate it.

I bet “homemade explosives” were just the firework materials in bulk or something. They will be looking for something to explain why they blew up a city block on accident.

Word on the street is that there were some legit explosives in there too. Could also be the LAPD trying to CYA.

Because they spent taxpayer dollars on a sweet new toy and they really wanted to use it. Sure, it makes more sense to try and neutralize them and then detonate them in a hole in the desert, but that’s a lot less fun.

Confiscates explosives to protect the neighborhood because they might accidentally explode and hurt people.... then immediately intentionally detonates them in neighborhood anyway.

Did they make a truck sized pipe bomb? Absolutely insane.

Jalopnik writers/bloggers just aren’t all that financially literate, so they commonly misunderstand financial situations.

I agree that something’s gotta change.

It’s an exceptionally challenging job and most of those shouting ACAB don’t have mental toughness to actually do the job. My friend became a police officer just last year and he’s already noticed how dealing with domestic violence, meth heads, and just general shitty people has affected his view of the world.

Discount brands have always struggled with trying to sell nice cars.

Yup. It’s hard to do business in Brazil.

The XJ is fairly similar. Simple, capable, and not terrible to live with on a daily basis. I joke that for around $300/yr you can keep one on the road just about forever - especially if you aren’t wheeling it.
