It's just a response to new regulations. Every car must weigh 4000 lbs. and be powered by a 600 cc scooter engine. It's meant to encourage passing.

Sorry, I meant to post this picture ( [image.motortrend.com] ) of the XJ13, due to its resemblance to the E-Type. I definitely agree with your idea, though. I would love to see a mid-engined E-Type.
