The writers failed LF as well. They couldn’t write his character well at all without Martin’s source material.
The answer is simple: D&D didn’t know how to write for Littlefinger because his scheming and conversation was too complex for anyone other than Martin to handle properly. So, they killed him off instead in a contrived scenario. The end.
