On really cold days, i.e. below +20 degrees F, I’ll let my DD idle after a cold start until the ECM decides it’s OK to go from fast idle to normal idle speed. This is typically a minute or less. Who am I to argue with the GM engineers who wrote the ECM firmware. Otherwise it’s just drive gently as usual until the car…
It would be trivially easy to measure the current draw of the lighting system with any DMM. You have ten units, each with a 3x5 LED array. I’m guessing they are driven as 5 columns of 3 LEDs in series. If you assume 20 mA per LED at full intensity, that’s 100 mA per array, or 1 Amp total. Less than your car audio…
Instead of painted/decal flames coming off the front of the car - lightning bolts.
Solder-sucker tools *and* solder wick are both valuable components of your PCB repair/replacement tool set. Along with an alcohol pump reservoir, PCB alcohol scrub brush, etc.
Trumps runs again in 2024 against the “do-nothing” Biden admin and wins.
I love the electro-porn photos posted here. More Jalops than I expected appear to have solid electronics skills. The closest I’ve come to this is fixing one of my 28 year old garage door opener control boards last year, by resoldering a broken solder joint on a PCB relay. Signed, retired BSEE/MSEE.
...to pull the head...all you had to do was drain the radiator, disconnect coolant hoses, fuel and vacuum lines, and a couple harnesses, take the valve cover off, remove the 10(?) head bolts and the head came right off.
Starred for “museum of automotive sadness”.
I skimmed this article and my only thought is, why do people watch stupid crap like this?
I’ll add that as Ad_absurdum_per_aspera put it, “I want the rise time of my turn signals (and even more so, brake lights) to be as fast as possible, and if the effect is jarring, all the better.” That’s why I replaced the incandescent brake lamps in my DD with Philips LED equivalents. You could do this (duplicate the…
If you really wanted to duplicate the appearance of an incandescent lamp, you’d have to rig up a measurement system for that specific miniature lamp, and measure intensity vs. time both on and off. Then you could write a firmware algorithm to duplicate that. Maybe a simple linear PWM over time is close enough, maybe…
In my area I’ll see a Rolls about once a year, and Ferraris and Bentleys a couple times a year. In summer I’ve occasionally seen the same Tesla Roadster. My best experience was visiting the UK in 2007, where we rented a Saab 9-5 turbodiesel wagon estate car. I saw a Caterham at a petrol station, and two or three Smart…
I drain grease into a plastic container left over from the deli/prepared food counter. It has a lid, and I keep it in the freezer until nearly full when I then put it into a reused plastic bag and into the trash. The (#5 recycling symbol) plastic stands up just fine to hot grease out of a frying pan.
Child safety paranoia? Uhhhh, pretty sure all first world countries really care about the safety of their children because we value life.
I’m old enough to remember lying down in the “behind the back seat” area of a ‘58 Chevy station wagon on a long trip, and while under the influence of Dramamine, sleeping away most of a trip to Ontario in the back seat of a ‘66 Olds Delta 88 sedan.
I’d bet that the majority of the readers here grew up without riding in a car seat or on a booster seat. Most of us lived.
Any Honda Civic three door hatch 1973-2005. Nimble, practical, reliable. I owned a 6th gen for eight years and it was dirt simple for the time, fun to drive, and very reliable.
Neutral: All you folks with donut spares, check the pressure at least once a year; twice is better. They don’t stay at 60 psi indefinitely.
It seems to me that the “typical” LR owner is similar to the “typical” MB/BMW owners who lease a new car every three years and are so wealthy that they can afford a perpetual $600-$800 or more per month lease payment, in addition to $N000 up front.
