Most plug into your cigarette lighter and auto start recording when it receives power (IE when you turn your car on and off). Others have motion detection for when you're parked if your car gets hit. They also auto overwrite the oldest files when the card is full.

Any dash cam that has GPS will show approximate speed. I have a Mini 0801 Ambarella, ~$100 shipped without GPS, ~$120 shipped with GPS.

I would recommend the Mini 0801 Ambarella (make sure it has the ambarella chip). I've had mine for 2.5-3 months with no issues, just don't use class 10 microSD cards. The non-GPS versions can be had for 100 shipped and are small enough to hide behind your rear view mirror.

My car (mazda 6, slightly lowered) makes grinding/rubbing noises during low speed city turns (winter tires rubbing on something) same thing happens to my friends wife ms3 (winter tires, not sure if lowered). Maybe you're having a similar issue.

No issues during a 5 minute drive to the liquor store in a GC8. The hardest part when swapping between LHD and RDH (coming from the owner) is remembering that the blinker and wiper stalk switch.
