I used to work in a motorcycle shop. We referred to these design decisions as the PCD (product cheapening department). Even the old triumph motorcycles (vertical split crankcase) could have not leaked oil if they’d just specipied a bit better (and more expensive) gasket material. We’re talking maybe $2 per vehicle…

I generally blame it on the designer. My job is to make his design work.
