The NES itself isn’t modded, that’s poor wording on the writer’s part. He uses a flash cart (Powerpak) to do the savestates on since that flash cartridge supports savestates, and he only uses that cartridge for practicing. The actual speedrun attempts are done on an official cartridge of the game.
