Our solution was simply to not get married. 22 years together and counting. Neither one of us is religious so marriage is basically a legal contract to ensure enforcement of rights and in our jurisdiction legally, an oral promise is as binding as a written one, so we are happily married without a wedding.

I disagree. Without suggesting I am an expert on the American Constitution, our Charter of Rights and Freedoms offers significantly more legal protection than the US legislation. Furthermore in Canada, there is a legislated separation of Church and State which does not exist in the US. Thus the legal parameters and…
