The author’s premise is that Reade’s credibility is being unfairly questioned because she is poor. I am submitting that this woman is not poor, and that she did not grow up in poverty. I think we should question her credibility because she is a habitual liar, and that she of all people should not be held up as some

The fact that they are trying to make “lying about a degree” a “class thing” makes me so upset. She committed perjury. She lied about her expertise in order to send people to prison (and it’s not like they were rich people - they were mostly poor people of color, represented by public defenders). I cannot understand

Exactly. It infantalizes every person without the good fortune to grow up in privilege. “They can’t help but lie, cheat and steal; it’s who they are!”

If the two winners can’t be the same gender what is the point of merging them into a gender neutral category? By simple statistics and probability a majority of the winners would be one man and one woman, as non-binary actors are a distant minority. The whole rational is to eliminate gender distinction in the awards.

Her dad was a sports reporter and a corporate PR executive, with a military pension.

Sure seems like this article implies that people in poverty lie, cheat, steal and manipulate by default.

Exactly, why is Jezebel so intentful in their efforts to undermine Biden. It is past Bernie hurt. WTF is going on here.

Tracy - you will look back at this article one day and be embarrassed by your own classism. Stop talking about people in poverty as if they are equivalent to a 10 year old.

Lying about having an undergraduate degree to get into law school is not a little thing, either. It’s not a matter of checking a box on a form and the law school just taking your word for it.

I don’t know why Jezebel is so dedicated to propping this woman up when she has huge credibility problems that have nothing to do with her being poor. False sexual assault allegations are rare but bolstering someone that many diehard MeToo feminists have completely written off for completely legitimate reasons doesn't

I think it’s kind of offensive to people who did grow up in poverty that this post frames their lives as full of abuse and lies, as if rich people are so pure.

I’m saying that this particular person was not impoverished not that no white people are poor.

I almost feel like this Jezebel piece is a bit patronizing in that it assumes poor people naturally try to connive and cheat their way out of poverty and how dare we think that’s unusual.

Rinse, repeat. This is 2016 all over again. Anyone who had Bernie Bro friends on Facebook back then (i.e. everyone posting here) knows that the Bros bit even harder on the Hillary conspiracy theories than the right wing did. For the obvious reason: the target of those lies wasn’t people on the right, who were already

yeah, I agree with this read of the situation. Like you could get to the end of this Jezebel piece and feel reasonably sure she grew up dirt poor, even though there’s nothing to really indicate that. Like... she was working for Joe Biden very early on in her career. This isn’t a normal sign of being held back.

I don’t disagree that class is an issue. I don’t disagree that there are no perfect victims. I don’t even disagree that she has lived a hard and sad life.

15 million white Americans live below the poverty line.

I swear this dead horse will come back to life if I just beat it a couple more times.

Huh, I’m not sure what to make of this. I really don’t know much about Reade’s background, but I was never under the impression she was poor/working class. My impression is that she seems to have come from a relatively middle to upper-middle class background, but abuse, money troubles, and grift can happen to anyone

Trivia fact: When adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind remains the highest grossing movie of all time. It’s not going to be forgotten or covered up, ala Song of the South.
