This is just like the sentiment that “there’s no good music out there anymore.” There is more good music out these days, I’d argue more good music, it’s just different and it’s not present in the traditional mediums (radio is a shell of what it once was).

Those engines may be better for the application but they are also much heavier and there were strict weight limits for the design so that it can be airlifted. It’s probably a trade off the military was willing to make.
