@sweetmonkey: USB? For Skyping I just use a USB webcam with a builtin mic. Then I can leave the speakers plugged in. Of course that would require an extra purchase.

I find its quite annoying and slightly distracting (especially in small classroom settings) to have to listen to someone typing away on their laptops.
