I certainly liked this better than the review. I think we are seeing such extremes with Elena, so jarring, uncomfortable and sad but it is intentional. We are seeing the box cover of a puzzle and the balance of the show is putting them together for the viewers. Seems unfair to criticize in the first episode.

I see your point, but I had enough confidence in the writers and show that once the framework of the mythology was in place this turn on a dime with Brother Justin was going some place quite interesting.  That likely was the biggest “what” and “why” far more than just a cliffhanger.
