This is not a great trend in my opinion. Open world games feel more like tech demo’s then a good format for story telling. If the point isn’t telling a story then what am I even doing? If I am supposed to tell my own story then it just seems like lazy game design.

What I like about Final Fantasy 14 is that you can level up every class on the same character. For a different, but similar reason I sometimes like to level up a new Job. It has a therapeutic relaxing feeling to me. Like watering a plant and watching it grow over time.
