"Maybe some second-tier schools would take a run at joining the first tier—not by shelling out $100 million for a new field house, but by spending a lot less on a few five-star recruits."
Dead on. That is correct sir.
I love everything about Deadspin except for their war against the NCAA. What's next, a story about why J school students should be paid to write for the school paper ;)?
Students on academic scholarships are responsible for performing and bringing the academic ranking up, which in turn brings in millions in grants and increased funding.
So did your mommy and daddy pay for your schooling AfterDark? Some of us have to pay for it ourselves.
Agree with you Boner. A free education is freaking awesome. These guys should be grateful.
So Tom, when is Jay Bilas' guest column coming out? You really need to get over this little bug in your ass. Who paid for your education?
Wow. I really hope Deadspin made sure CBS set up a scholarship fund with all the advertising money they made from the Late Show episode last night. I can't believe that CBS is trying to get their ratings up by putting Kevin Ware on TV. That's disgusting.

Just remember, if you start paying players you will only have about 64 schools competing in their own new collegiate athletic association because all of the other schools won't be able to afford to pay all of their student athletics. So most likely you wouldn't have the Wichita State's of the world in a The Final Four…
Academic scholarship students are absolutely expected to provide an ROI while they are with the school. They are there to help increase the academic reputation of the school and in turn bring in thousands of dollars in grant money and increased applications and enrollment. Schools aren't just giving out academic…
How is that BS? Students who attend a university with an academic scholarship are adding to the academic reputation of the school, which in turn brings in thousands and thousands of dollars in grants, as well as increased applications and enrollment. People want to attend schools with great academic reputations so…
