What? These aren't crossguards. It's exhaust vents for the lightsaber overheating(synthetic crystal). It prevents a decently made synthetic crystal from blowing up in your face.

BTW, The lightsaber here is not actually a crossguard, it's using a synthetic crystal to power it, and it's not fully stable, so the sides are essentially heat vents. If you look at the trailer, they're actually similar looking to flames.
