This is the problem. These movies don’t feel like part of the Star Trek universe, to me. TNG, the Trek I remember the most fondly, was cerebral. I don’t want my Trek to be “a lot of fun!” there are enough stupid entertaining action movies already, and precious few thoughtful ones.

The ‘09 movie wasn’t awful, besides the Beasty Boys music, and the production team not understanding interstellar scale... (a theme which JJ continued into TFA).

I think the reboots would’ve been improved immensely if the first movie had ended with Pike in command, and Kirk with a field promotion to first officer or something. By Into Darkness, they would’ve been out in space for a few years and could’ve justified giving him command after Pike was killed.

Yeah, that’s such a bizarre thing to write. I’ve never liked reboot Kirk anyway but I love the rest of the crew.
