(i) Anyone who lives in SE Michigan has seen these things broken down all over the place. Never in my life have I seen anything of this magnitude failing all over. (ii) I have it on good authority they have spent over 6 months trying to fix these issues and can't figure it out.

There IS in fact a point where it is COMPLETELY irrational to continue driving something. Transmission rebuild & welding in a new floor to an auto worth a few grand is one of those times.

Likely a military guy (huge bases in SD) and has faced much worse during his tenure. That, and a fight could lead to an arrest, which could lead to bye bye military career.
Since SD is home to huge military bases, very little doubt in my mind the first victim is a military guy. Fighting = possibly arrested = military career in serious jeopardy.
