Yeah, the joke is "Garfunkel, Messina and Oates" on the Simpsons, and these two really did blatantly rip that off.

I would say it's not unlike Girls, in that perhaps 5% of the population is aware of it, but that 5% includes a goodly percentage of those who a) care about whatever the zeitgeist might be, b) would use a word like zeitgeist in the first place and c) generate just about all of the content in the "new media."
