Man it’s in my opinion the best NES game ever. Try it out, I think the combat and the story probably hold up great. I tried to play Zelda on Switch recently and it was nowhere near as fun as I remember it being as a kid, but I want to play this pretty bad now lol. I think it would still hold up pretty good.

I often think I imagined it too since no one ever talks about it today like Zelda and Final Fantasy. I remember playing all three of those pretty close to each other as a kid and Crystalis was easily my favorite.
