Every time I see this little piece of real estate without a gated shifter a small part of my soul dies.

I live in DC, so while the recession didn't affect us too much, the sequester has slowed things a little. So short answer is this: it's about the same as it's been for the past 5 years.

I think this is going to go away for passenger cars sometime in the next 10 or so years. I think the electronically controlled "automated manual" will become the new standard for all manner of passenger cars. Or, we'll all by driving hybrids or evs that don't require them.
