Think of anime less of a genre and more of a category. A shonen anime like Naruto is VERY different then a Seinen anime like Elfen Lied. Which is very different from a Shojo anime like Sailor Moon.
Shonen Anime: Anime for young boys. Usually action shows like DBZ or Naruto
Shoujo Anime: Anime ostensibly for young girls, but often more obsessed with by older men
Mecha anime: self-explanatory
Moe anime: The worst thing ever.
