The Animated Series isn’t canon though? it doesn’t become so until a concept introduced there shows up in a main series. so he wasn’t even *in* the continuity until he was mentioned in Discovery. so this is the only Robert April that has existed in regards to the actual series.

it does mention elsewhere that up until recently they were fine with assorted different pronouns. it is a relatively new development.
