I joked back in the Disqus days that I’d bet a certain number of buggy whip makers are actually doing quite well this day, having retooled slightly to sell bespoke S&M whips and riding crops on Etsy.

Can anyone with historical/geographic knowledge explain to me why Houston was established where it was? Yeah, yeah: Fairly spacious harbor protected (*snurk*) by barrier islands. Still, seems like a monumentally bad decision to build a major city directly on a storm-ridden sea on the lowest ground for miles around.
