This is kind of a major overhaul suggestion, but if backup is that important, you might want to reverse your approach: instead of trying to add a home server software to your htpc, try to add a htpc software to your home server pc.

That's my preference, too, with the exception of using Shark's Win7 Codecs. Windows media player 12 actually plays most things out of the box, even quicktime mov files. The only reason I add a codec pack is for MKVs and finer subtitle control.
