I know this is a week late, but I had to respond. I read that script too, and felt exactly the opposite. While Spaihts' draft has some flaws, and isn't the backstory for the Alienverse that I'd want, it's better than what I saw in theaters in almost every way:

Here's a simple test: does Avatar take the most mysterious, most otherworldly, most oft-speculated-on element of a classic scifi film and reveal that it is LITERALLY a guy in a suit, and also God? No? Then it cannot be as bad as Prometheus.

A cliffhanger is different from ill-defined character motivations and an opaque mythos. Also, having a sequel end that way is different from having a prequel/reboot/spinoff end that way.
