Yeah, e.g. Easter, which is straight up the name of a goddess of spring. They didn’t even bother to change the name after grabbing the ceremony of “rebirth,” unlike in this case.
As a former Catholic, I was surprised that they could steal all kinds of things from pagan traditions, but yoga = BAD.
Doesn’t this tweet make you feel safe, warm and cozy?
If that will save $17k, think how much it will save to move Melania down to the White House and cutting out weekend trips to Florida!
The rationale for the vanishing visitor’s log was given as ‘it saves the taxpayers $17,500.’ How much did that MOAB cost? Or those remarkably ineffective cruise missiles?
Gaze fixed on hair....and one of them asked me if that was “how the teenagers are doing it now”
I saw that video with Maxine Waters and immediately thought of Shade Court. I am delighted by how much your column has influenced my life.
The campus-rape epidemic—in which one in five female college students is said to be the victim of sexual assault—is an imaginary enemy. Never mind the debunked rape scandals at Duke and the University of Virginia, or the soon-to-be-debunked case at the heart of “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about an alleged…
It’s supposed to be demoralizing, not enforceable.
All the Trump supporters I know, most of whom are rural, not college-educated, and white, care about problems and solutions that have no effect on their lives at all, thanks to right-wing radio and TV.
The scary thing is, I know that even if his policies result in them being thrown out onto the streets, they’ll still support him because of the racism or because of loyalty to the Republican party. One of the things that stayed with me from reading about the Great Depression and FDR is that despite the Republicans…
Is there a third category I wonder? All those people who thought something along the lines of “he can’t be that bad, he’ll surround himself with smart people, he’ll become presidential” who essentially voted for him over Hillary...
Hah! I had the exact same reaction this morning, since I read the Times and Politico. Like... two articles coming to two very different conclusions. Just goes to show, if you want to write an article “People like/hate X” you can find enough people to support either side of things.
Just more evidence that American politics is less about ideas and beliefs than it is about tribalism.
It’s obvious to me, if not to reporters, that Trump’s supporters will stick with him so long as he doesn’t back off on issues of race. That’s the only thing his hardcore supporters care about. He backs off on immigration or the Muslim ban or fires the Nazis in his adminstration, like Bannon, and they’ll turn. They…
Yeah, circumcision and FGM are obviously nowhere near to being equivalent. That doesn’t mean circumcision is okay though. You’re still cutting someones genitals for cultural reasons without their consent.
Both men and women perpetuate elements of the patriarchy which directly harm them.
Speaking as a circumcised trans woman, it’s still super fucked up and damaging. Pretending non consensual circumcision is cool isn’t helping anyone. If the clit has been removed, I agree. If the labia and hood have been removed? That’s kinda close. Both can be wrong. It doesn’t have to be a contest.
