Back on OG Battlefront and its myriad mods, I installed one that made most blasters kill you with one or two hits if you weren’t at extreme range. That changed the *whole* game, but boy was it fun. Made every popout from cover terrifying, since even a stray bolt could take your name.

The speed at which these ships (and NMS’) get from space the surface (a few seconds instead of minutes) would be plenty fast enough to heat things up. By the same token, moving from surface to space at the same speed would produce the same heat - either way, you’re moving incredibly fast through the same atmosphere.
