I'm guessing your finishing the story first(which unlocks Adventure mode, at least on PC) before you get into that.

I think it may also be to help get around the fact that some things they can't reduce the price cause the company its from doesn't want it sold below a certain price, so instead they just give you a giftcard. I know that used to be a thing when it came to games/electronics, but no idea if that is still going on.

I think hes not counting them cause Target does this thing sometimes where when you buy things they will give you a gift card instead of knocking money off the price. So hes counting those gift cards as free.
