In some respects, the accusations regarding James Franco call to mind the allegations against PWR BTTM musician, Ben Hopkins. By vocally trumpeting their queerness, both Franco and Hopkins were able to divert attention away from behavior behind closed doors that was anything but enlightened.
The problem is that the point of the game is the sense of depression and horror. They are just taking the characters they like and ignoring the point of the game. It would be like making a Bioshock mod without any violence or twists.

Dota 2 is rather interesting when it comes to sound. Most things have unique sounds, and people have even make quizs for it. You know the specific move (and sometimes the specific move with specific hats) just from the sound. It is rather impressive.
Extra Life is built around a single day, which is not the same as a single event. There’s a main stream of it that day, but much of it is from a variety of other, smaller streams and events. It’s like how Table Top Day is run by and has a stream by Geek&Sundry, but it encourages others to have their own events.
The problem with Extra Life is that it isn’t a single event that can be followed; anyone can participate from home and raise money for it with their own events or streams.

Last year, while banned, he started playing Dota 2. He even enjoyed it. Then he suddenly stopped, saying something about not being allowed to. It seems that Riot would prefer to have him in LoL than promoting Dota 2.

You are partially right. It was always a thing in 3.0 and 3.5, AD&D, 4e and 5e didn’t allow for as much racial customization.
