Interesting to note that Incorruptibility (seeming lack of deceaced’s decay) is used as one of the three miracles to qualify a person for sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church. Which I think is now mostly reasoned to be this process of saponification, so that the body does not seem to decay.

I bet they did. While people may have been less concerned with body odor, there is severe physical discomfort associated with dirty skin. We live in a consumer society. Consumer ‘values’ likely ultimately (eventually) outweigh any perceived value in traditional gender-typed behavior. They are increasingly marketed at too. I’ve read alot of articles about men’s grooming increasing, but I bet there is a larger trend of all men’s fashion-y things booming…
