Networks have been pulling shows after a few episodes for decades. There was no golden age of TV production. Go on wikipedia and you'll find hundreds of TV shows throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s that went for 13 episodes or less.
I believe they said that Redemption Island was the best season ever before that aired. IMO Caramoan didn't live up to the hype either.
