I haven't seen it in years, but I remember liking it a hell of a lot. It's really more a great lawyer movie than a great presidential movie, though.

Hey, I'm going to be in Springfield tomorrow for a job interview. Where should I have lunch?

I saw Hyde Park on Hudson at a preview screening last week. All around, a pretty inconsequential film. It features George VI as a main character, which gives it a slightly mockbuster-y vibe. About as dull and harmless as a movie in which Laura Linney gives a handjob to Bill Murray (playing FDR) could be.

I'm hoping for The President's Analyst, a presidential film in which you never actually see the president.

Roger Ebert had the definitive line on Nic Cage's performance in Bad Lieutenant: "Jimmy Stewart as a crackhead."

The Straight Story is the first movie I can remember seeing after which the audience burst into applause. I was confused at the time because I found the movie very boring. But I was also 12.

I'll throw out a book I read recently - Thinking the Twentieth Century, by the great historian Tony Judt, a combination history/memoir/reflection on the twentieth century written in conversation with Timothy Snyder while Judt was dying of ALS and thus losing all physical capacity.

The bigger crime, in my opinion, is that Farnsworth failed to earn even a nomination for his subtly heartbreaking work in Space Rage: Breakout on Prison Planet.

There were a couple shots in the scruffy-Bond section where I thought Craig looked like Jonathan Banks.

I love American Pastoral. Roth/Zuckerman manages to sustain an incredible level of emotional intensity throughout the book.
