I think they stopped in 2014, because once a Nintendo-published game ended up having the most kills by an absurd number the joke almost becomes unnecessary.

Yeah, I've got no problem with backtracking; hell, that basically is Metroid; without it you're just making Mega Man (or in the case of Prime, some kind of first-person Mega Man which does sound kinda rad). I could see an argument that it could be done better, but it's pretty exquisitely done in the first Prime.

I'll tentatively agree, with the caveat that Metroid can and should be able to do a lot of things - even ones that are seemingly antithetical to it. More than anything else, it's a game about caves. It's about moving through these labyrinths, often underground, sometimes not, inch by inch. That's where the horror

"Wow, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle doesn't just look not wretched, but actually kind of excellent?"

The first game's backtracking works really well because everything is interconnected, and because finding new paths is tied to upgrades, becoming stronger physically is tied directly to being more mobile or seeing new areas. And the map is organized in a way that means you can go from almost any area to any other one

Do it! I was secretly kinda hoping a couple people here would make their own in response. Or at least challenge my adding Qbby from BOXBOY!

And this - alongside the wonderful, batshit climax - is why Metal Gear Solid 2 remains so good. It's a game that has not just an actual point of view, but asks questions about the future in the newest storytelling medium out there. People criticize Kojima for so much, and some of that is entirely fair, but he also saw

It can be annoying not getting good sales for Nintendo games as easily as other stuff on the market, but I also think it speaks to something that they're a company that doesn't sell consoles at a loss and whose games generally keep their value fairly well. I remember purchasing Lords of Shadow 2 for around $17.00

Here ya go, though this is specifically for the Gameological channel in general and not MK8OT8TH.

Not just Nintendo consoles, but portable Nintendo consoles. That's been, to my understanding, a substantial part of the appeal.

Oh, most definitely. And I know I've said this a lot, but pretty much all the things people like about Nintendo are tied to their being a console owner. It'd be insane for most publishers to give Breath of the Wild a five year development cycle, and that was kind of necessary for that game to be as big as it is. Like,

@disqus_wallflower:disqus is fantastic, and collecting old stuff makes a ton of sense. I don't think I'll be doing that, but it'd probably be good to grab the stuff about my dad playing Breath of the Wild, I suppose.

It's always felt like an excuse to me, a big reason being that multiple console ownership at least from a distance seems to be more common than it was in the 16-bit era.

Regardless of anything else, removing old posts is pretty damn raw. There's well over a decade of comments, and more smart stuff than any pop culture site would deserve. I mean, there are actual articles - we even have a long-running segment on it here - about good and useful comments. The entire context for those is

There was a news report recently that all Univision sites - The A.V. Club amongst them - will switch from using Disqus to Kinja in what to my understanding is a way to drive user comments. Kind of doubt that'll work, partially because Kinja is awful, but I'm also not sure about what happens to all our old comments and

When I come back to the Avocado I'll try to push the games thread more aggressively, and I will probably make a Kinja account just for Gameological, but I'll probably limit myself more to there and our Discord server.

Capcom's reticence with the Switch is kind of silly now with how well it's doing, even if their reasoning isn't obtuse. They're clearly scared it'd be a situation like what happened with the Wii U, but considering it's Nintendo's fastest selling machine, those 2D platform collections should theoretically sell really

I'd call it more "frustrating," instead. Like with the silver enemies, I do think it's valuable that the game gets tougher to respond to your skill level. And I like the Yiga, so I'm happy at least the ambusher versions didn't disappear. It's just that the Blademasters and archers attack you far too frequently.

I have absolutely nothing that'd sufficiently respond, but an upvote would certainly not be that. Thank you so much for your willingness to discuss this, and especially in such a powerful and profound way. This resonated with me despite not having circumstances resembling it, and it's evidence on the power and value

As much as I adore Mario and the (3) DS, I feel like a lot of his efforts on those platforms were less than optimal (though admittedly, despite loving 3D World I've not played 3D Land). Honestly, the one I think is best isn't even a Mario game; it's Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.
