I use SideStep and Tunnelblick to connect to an Amazon EC2 Instance, which I have setup to act as my VPN and Proxy using OpenVPN etc. Works great and doesn't cost much to run. The best part is that SideStep auto detects if the Wifi isn't secure... then reroutes through the VPN as needed.
