This works at hotels, too. I’ve noticed that the more friendly you are to front desk clerks, the better your room is. 

I was once on the way back to the states from China and saw a male flight attendant speaking fluent Chinese with someone on the flight, so I asked him how he got so good, where he learned, etc. We had a short but nice conversation.
