White dude here. If I wanted to see a bunch of people who look just like me I'd go outside. I am, after all, in Seattle.

I really, really like my TV shows filled up with people who do not look like me, with characters (and actors) who have completely different backgrounds from what I grew up with. It's rad, and it

Also relevant because the article kind of argues that "ethnic" (blerg) audiences only watch "ethnic" shows, and now that the percentage of shows featuring "ethnic" characters equals the percentage of "ethnic" people in America, those audiences won't grow, because white people won't watch them. Which is, as has already

You're picking a fight that doesn't exist.

Wow, you're a dick. First of all - it's a comment board, you don't have to agree with the comments but telling people they aren't allowed to share them because of their race/gender/privilege puts you in the shithead category and does NOT make you oppressed by their privilege. Second of all, people should be AWARE of

Oh, please. You're picking a fight. Tell me where I was giving a seal of approval. The entire comment was a plea for the entertainment industry not to listen to small minds just because they're white minds.

Second this shit. I, as a white woman, have been *craving* more diverse TV because shows produced by white people, starring and written by white people, are FUCKING BORING. They do not address the full range of lived human experiences; they do not even address many of my experiences as a white woman. So bring it on.

TV is really fucking good now. Like there is so much that is so good that I will never even watch because there is already so much that is so good that I am watching.

As a bar-dweller, I completely agree.

I like the freedom rush it gives me. It's so strong that it usually overpowers the guilt.

You are way less likely to catch people masturbating in cemeteries.

Yah...that was me. I'm TeamDog 110%!! So much so that I'm willing to get robbed (though there would be nothing to steal)

*raises hand*

Glad I'm not the only one who thought this was horrible. I hate viral proposals SO MUCH! So happy my husband thought it was import to propose to me in private instead of making it some sort of shit show.

ugh, people on facebook are posting this like "omg so cute <333" barf

This is so fucking gross.

It sounds like you were at a liberal arts school with an unusual amount of research going on. Professors at liberal arts colleges are usually hired primarily to teach, whereas research university professors are hired for, and assessed based on their research. There are some lecturers who are hired solely to teach, but

AMEN. I have watched critical thinking and writing skills nosedive over the last 7 years. So much plagiarism. I blame "no child left behind" combined with the STEM supremacy you identified.

Hopefully, people will catch wind of this and the tide will change from "STEM fields or bust" to "Oh, I guess everything works together."

Not to mention, it's completely overwhelming and distressing being told at 18 that you need to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life.

BUT! STEM employers complain to career counselors that many of their new hires lack writing, critical analysis, and communication skills, and that they wish their hires had more historical context for some of the issues involved in the projects they work on, be it for building bridges or biotech.
