They shoot Walking Dead on 16mm and it looks fucking chunky as hell at anything other than high bitrate 1080p downloads.

This kind of logic only applies if you're planning on shooting one film and one film only. If you're shooting things all year long, it makes infinitely more sense to spend that $13,500 towards a RED. Not to mention how much of a return on investment you'd get doing jobs with that equipment as a cinematographer.
