Simple answer:

Let's not jump to any conclusions folks. Let the law enforcement bodies concerned do their jobs —this is why we have them. It could be the work of a domestic or foreign nutjob. And honestly, with the sheer quantity and distribution of U.S. enemies, we know nothing conclusively.

I agree with you, but it is impossible to overstate how much some folks HATE red onion. My personal theory is that they haven't had really fresh, tasty ones. This is not their fault necessarily, but it makes the hatred more understandable.
