How does the combat compare to Dark Souls/Bloodborne or Nioh? Is it a dodge and punish combat system like those games are? I can’t tell from clips how intricate the combat is.

Less people to match together means quicker matchmaking, better connections. The game launched with only 2 pvp modes (quickplay and competetive), that way there is a huge player base and quicker matchmaking for each mode. They were trying to improve matchmaking and connections, but 4 v 4 was just too boring.
