The median income distribution is much closer than the mean. Trump captured more of the very rich and that skews his average higher but if you look at vote distribution by income bracket HRC only won the bottom income brackets around the 55 - 45 range, so there were plenty of poor Trump voters.

Clinton was actively involved in instituting policies that hurt midwesterners (by virtue of being a politician that isn’t explicitly pro-consumer like Warren). Trump didn’t have that baggage since he was never a politician (and Mnuchin wasn’t a factor pre-election, though Bannon should’ve been).
