Civil asset forfeiture needs to end yesterday. I don’t even understand why it would even be a controversial suggestion, it very obviously violates the 5th amendment, which, through the 14th amendment, applies to states as well as the federal government.

Cars of people who most often bear the brunt of law enforcement action. The poor mostly. Find a joint? Seize the car. Gun without a permit? Seize the car. Over your bag limit with wild game? Seize the truck.

People conspire to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from schools and they’ll pay a fine at worst. But some guy caught with an ounce of weed is a danger to society and needs to be incarcerated for several years.

So, there’s this guy who walks in a bar, gets a beer, starts chatting with the bartender, tells him his mother-in-law is a nagging hag who is driving him and his wife nuts, and at some point the bartender interjects:

You don’t have to tell me. Every time I see Tom Cruise, I think: “Yep, that’s a real bottom right there.”

First you complain that I don’t have a good relationship with you mother. Then you complain that I do. What the hell do you want from me?
